Afraid of you guys not taking us seriously, here’s an example of what we are doing . I hope this comparison picture makes you dying to have some serious fun with us!

For those who care: shot on an EOS 7D with standard zoom lens. I know, I know, where the hell is the Bokeh???? Well, That’s really the thing we’re doing – learning while shooting! turns out that we need to invest in ND filters and/or faster lenses…

Anyways, I have 2 quizzes in 8 hours, so PLEASE leave your contact info in the comment (will not be displayed) or just email skipkinggg@gmail.com

This coming week at UCSD

Fellow students, staff, faculty members, and readers following the events that have transpired on campus recently,

This week at UCSD we stand at a crossroad.  There will be many events happening this week that will throw the campus into even more chaos.  With multiple ASUCSD meetings, the planned demonstrations, and the planned release of the newest issue of The Koala, expect a much more heated environment than what has been experienced thus far.  We at TRTV will try our best to bring you news from both sides and to present every event in a completely unbiased way. It is our goal to be the voice of UCSD and we will try our best to achieve that goal.  We will be on campus all week with cameras bringing you videos and written accounts of all the events.  Stay tuned to trtvucsd.com for all the news relating to on-campus events.

Noose is found on the 7th floor of Geisel Library.

Yesterday I received this email from one of my organic chemistry classmates:

From: [Name Protected] [2010 Winter Burkart]
To: All Section Instructors; All Section Designers; All Teaching Assistants; All Students; All Auditors
CC:
Subject: Please read. UCSD has never been more unsafe for students of color.
Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010
On the evening of February 25, 2010, a NOOSE was found hanging on the 7th floor of Geisel. For those of you who have an understanding of American history, the noose has long been a symbol of terror and death for people of color. As a Vietnamese American, this is a direct threat to me and I feel threatened. I feel unsafe to be on campus.

Please pass this on to your friends. For those of you have have been wondering what the “big deal” was with the Compton Cookout, here it is. The noose to go with the “compton lynching” found at SRTV.

Please be safe. I fear riots will be at campus very soon.
Makibaka, Huwang Matakot. (Resist, Struggle, Do not be afraid).
Isang mahal (one love),

A picture of the noose was attached to the email. It is very disheartening to hear that even after the Teach-In something as extreme as this would occur at UCSD. On a side note, TRTV will not comment on the perpetrators intelligence for hanging a noose on the 7th floor of Geisel.

What we found even more interesting was the responses from other students to this webct email:

From: [Name Protected] [2010 Winter Burkart]
To: All Section Instructors; All Section Designers; All Teaching Assistants; All Students
CC:
Subject: Please Stop Overreacting
Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010
Enough said. I don’t wanna commet on all the controversy on campus, but all this overreaction and escalation is getting ridiculous. Sorry to spam your e-mail but I feel a majority of the campus feels this way and, hopefully, you do too.

=) Yay for the midterm being over!

Sincerely,
[Name Protected]

Another classmate responded with:

Dear [Name Protected],

Thank you for your generous attempt to downplay what has been happening and sharing it with everybody.

If you didn’t catch on, that was sarcasm.

It seems to me that you are resistant to step out of your shoes and hold someone else’s point of view for a moment. If you don’t understand why there has been such impact on others, why these acts are a big deal, well, go to the library and please do us all a favor and learn something about history.

Oh and thanks for sharing your stubbornness with everyone.

And please, don’t speak for others. If other students want to express the way they feel they can do it themselves.

Thanks!

i agree with [Name Protected], as long as people keep putting up these racial barriers, racism will continue to exist, people step off your high horse learn to make fun or yourselves for a change. this seems to be all one big joke and people are taking it way to seriously.

Another student was sick of the bickering and abuse of WebCT:

This is not the place to voice you’re opinions. This is for Ochem my friends. We all have different opinions on this matter, but please, don’t use this. I’ve already gotten a bunch of spam from WebCT, and it’s really getting annoying. Keep an open mind, but there’s a right place to express what’s on it. Sorry for spamming everyone’s email for hopefully the last time.

One thing is for sure: we all hate email spam.

I am really curious how other members of the UCSD community and the BSU feel about this. Again, we have approached the BSU to no avail, hopefully they will have their voice heard and contact us soon.

More updates coming soon!

February 24th Protest Videos Coming Soon…

Yesterday, members of TRTV and I filmed the Teach-in at UCSD as well as the BSU press conference. It saddens me not to have the footage up yet but we don’t have the manpower or the editing capabilities to be able to have a 24 hour turn around. Those people’s voices continue to not be heard. This is exactly why we need SRTV to go up as soon as possible. One thing I found to be out right disgusting: during the 2nd Teach-in (the one by the statue of King Triton) I decided to head over to library walk. Everyone seemed to be going about their day not even realizing what was going on less than 50 yards away. I asked numerous bystanders if they knew what was going on or where the Teach-in was being held. The responses varied from not knowing there was a teach in to thinking it was “some boring thing in the Ballrooms.” Thoroughly appalled, I told them to follow me and look down the alleyway that overlooks King Triton from library walk. Needless to say the bystanders looked on in shock and amazement at the crowd that had assembled. Almost all of them said, “I had no idea.”

This is a splintered campus. Let SRTV bring it together. Put us on the air as soon as possible.

Videos coming soon.

Utsav’s and Tom’s address

First of all, lets hear Dan’s address: This blog category will document how every video journals are made. Emphasize will be made on the workflow as a whole.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand the terms, I’ll explain them in dedicated posts later. Just to keep things elegant.

Audio: Zoom H4n at max quality setting

After setting up two white light sources, we managed to keep f/1.4 and ISO 640 to keep the histogram in good shape. Apparently I could increase the contrast a little bit to get a better spread histogram.

For the gamma curve, I used Marvel’s cine-gamma curve, (http://marvelsfilm.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/canon-7d-picture-style-with-cine-gamma-s-curve-free-download/)

Histogram of footage right out of canon 7D:

frame of footage right out of the canon 7D:

Enter Post production:

I brought the footage in Premiere CS4 and synced the footage with the Zoom H4n audio by comparing the waveform with 7D’s audio. After trimming the clips, I imported the sequences into After Effects CS4, where I did color corrections and relighting in 16bits linearized sRGB color space. (raised the exposure around Tom’s face, blended a S-curve adjusted version of tom with soft light on top and lowered the red saturation (Tom’s idea).)

skipping the technical stuff, 16bits basically allows you to heap color/luminance adjustments on top of each other without producing much artifacts.

Then, I rendered the adjusted video into a Tiff sequence (more on that in future posts).

For the audio, I just raised the volume and added it to the final Tiff sequence sitting in After Effects.

In the end, render and upload. Render settings: quicktime H.264 best quality multi-pass, if you so care.

See Tom’s address in HD here: http://trtv.squarespace.com/journal/2010/2/23/station-manager-what-is-trtv.html

We did not have time (7 hours at least) to render Utsav’s address in HD, I apologize for that.

FIRE Sends Letter to UCSD

On February 22nd FIRE or Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, who defend individual rights in higher education, sent this letter to the AS President, Utsav Gupta, and Chancellor Fox condemning their recent actions pertaining to the freezing of all student org media funds as well as the shutting down of SRTV. You can view the letter here:

http://www.thefire.org/article/11596.html

Stay tuned for updates. We will be covering the Press Conference and Teach-In.

BSU Hosts: “Honest and Open Dialogue.” TRTV is denied filming access.

On Tuesday Feb 23rd at 5pm, a few members of TRTV and I attended the BSU hosted event,  ”Honest and Open Dialogue on Campus Climate” at the Muir Quad. We had the intention of filming the event, however we were met with hostility and were told to refrain from even taking pictures. Our goal was to record the event from a purely historical viewpoint, and to give a voice to the members of the BSU and the attendees of the dialogue (we are not fans of “spinning” information). They asked the crowd if anyone was against our filming, no one raised their hand. We were still asked to not record, even after we explained our goals, objective viewpoint, and that we were not going to edit the footage. They stated that it was a sensitive time for the attendees. The members of TRTV and I were respectful of their request and vacated without conflict. Yet, they clearly allowed other people in the crowd to film their event, one such recording already has appeared on youtube and can be found below. We have approached the BSU multiple times about broadcasting an interview or providing an outlet for their voice, yet despite our efforts we have been met with hostility and a negative attitude. Although we have been treated rudely, we still seek to provide an objective view of the ongoing events on campus and we stand in solidarity in support of our fellow students.

Here is the youtube video we found:

If TRTV had filmed this we would have been able to provide our viewers and the BSU with a clip they would be proud of, not one filmed sideways on an iphone in horribly low resolution. You have my card. Have your voice heard. Let us help you.

An interview about HDSLR film-making

With Vincent Laforet:

BTW, the two addresses published lately were shot with a Canon 7D, one of the few HDSLR cameras.

Who are we?

This is a purely student run blog with no affiliation to SRTV. All content on this site was shot and edited using member's personal equipment and has not received funding from UCSD or A.S. of any kind. The only reason UCSD is part of the website address is because we happen to be UCSD students and the coverage is of UCSD events. We remain a neutral media entity where students can find news and artistic expresson. Enjoy. -TRTV Management
